BLACK THEATRE TROUPE

THE BLACK THEATRE TROUPE 2009-2010 SEASON

A Lesson Before Dying by Romulus Linney

February 18-28, 2010

By the end of this powerful adaptation of Ernest J. Gaines' prize-winning novel, someone is going to die and at least some one is going to learn something.

A young man is to be executed for a murder he probably didn't commit.

But in Louisiana in 1948 the question is not whether or not young Jefferson will be executed but how he will face his fate.

This is a story of inevitability, not surprise.

One Mo’ Time Conceived by Vernel Bagneris

April 22-May 2, 2010

This spirited musical revue brings back the great era of Black vaudeville by recreating one night at the Lyric Theatre in New Orleans.

This is the storied theater where jazz legends like Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson often appeared.

It is also very much a tribute to the dances and dancers of the time.

Your feet will start tapping, your fingers will start snapping and you will soon be rockin’ in the rafters and dancin' in the aisles.

[*] 2010-1st Annual Phoenix Honor's Debutante Ball  May 8

######################################################

Dear Friends

It is with no small amount of regret that I announce that the date for Phoenix Honors Debutante Ball will be rescheduled

from Sunday, February 28th to Saturday, May 8th, 2010.

The deciding factor in this decision has been that quite  a few Debutante's/Parents have decided to drop out of the program.

This past year proved quite a challenge to our continuing success.  The economic downturn has definitely impacted  our organization.

This is a decision, which has been very difficult, and the final decision has not been taken lightly.

I still believe the success of a young person is measured by the level of support around them. Studies show that girls may lose

self-confidence and self-worth during their teenage years, become less physically active, perform less well in school, and

neglect their own interests and aspirations. During these years, girls are more vulnerable to negative outside influences and to mixed messages about risky behaviors.

We at Phoenix Honors strives to foster an environment where teenage girls are mentored to create their own opportunities

for life success to become role models to their peers while contributing to the betterment of their community.

Being a leader of self at an early age is key to the success of any community.

There are no words for the gratitude I have for the board of directors, mentors, investors, partners, kaari, ms lisa and

volunteers of Phoenix Honors that make this environment possible.  When we contribute our time, resources

and energy together for the success of all, the opportunities are limitless.

Sincerely,

Ilean Gray

[*] 2010 Arizona Black Film Showcase                                                         Mar 26-28

###################################################################

ARIZONA BLACK FILM SHOWCASE: TAKE 8

(Tempe, AZ)  -- Back by popular demand, the Arizona Black Film Showcase resumes play March 26th through March 28th

at the MadCap Theaters in Tempe, Arizona.  Tickets are on sale now through www.azblackfilm.com.   Take advantage

of Early Bird prices through February 26th.  The AZBFS Family invites everyone to participate in this community and volunteer-driven event .

Now in its eighth year, this annual competitive film showcase is dedicated to celebrating and promoting the dynamic works of aspiring

filmmakers whose works embrace the spirit and diversity of the Black cultural experience.  AZBFS 2008 Feature Film winner

Something is Killing Tate, by director Leon Lozano, is one such example of how the Showcase has helped further the exposure of

developing filmmakers.  Lozano’s film has gone on to win a number of awards and was picked up for mass marketing by cable

network Starz in Black.  Look for future AZBFS success stories at this year’s Showcase.  Up to 40 films will be screened throughout

the competition.  Missed a film?  Come back for seconds on Sunday, March 28th.  AZBFS will host its  Best Of” screening event at MadCap

Theaters featuring a second look at some of the most-talked about films at this year’s Showcase.

Turning the spotlight on future filmmakers, AZBFS’ Youth Film Boot Camp aims to inspire young people to explore the art of filmmaking.

This one-day workshop invites high school students to interact with industry professionals as they learn the A to Z’s of filmmaking.

This year’s Film Boot Camp will be held on the first day of the Showcase (Friday, March 26th ) at the Collins

College Satellite Campus in Tempe.  Contact youthbootcamp@azblackfilm.com for more info.

AZBFS continues to unite aspiring and established filmmakers in a setting designed to share knowledge, resources and talent from around the world.

Over the years, the Showcase has had the honor and privilege of hosting a number of esteemed industry professionals who have been gracious in

sharing their time and experience with bourgeoning talent.  Guests have included Oscar nominated director Lee Daniels who, in 2008, offered

AZBFS attendees a glimpse of a little film he was working on at the time.  That film, “Precious: Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” has

gone to win several awards and recently landed six Oscar nominations.

Other AZBFS guests who have participated in sharing their time and knowledge with attendees include award-winning actress Lynn Whitfield

(“The Josephine Baker Story,” “A Thin Line Between Love And Hate”), actor and author Hill Harper (“Lackawanna Blues,” “CSI:NY”),

actor-director Bill Duke (“A Rage In Harlem,” “Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit”), actor-director Mario Van Peebles (“New Jack City, “Posse”),

comedian Wayne Brady (“The Wayne Brady Show,” “Let’s Make A Deal”), Reginald Hudlin (“House Party,” “Boomerang”), and others.

On Saturday, March 27th, Showcase attendees will also have an opportunity to visit sponsors and vendors at AZBFS’ Vendor and

Resource Fair at the MadCap Theaters in Tempe.  Join us later at the aloft Hotel in Tempe as we celebrate the works of those

filmmakers who will have left a lasting impression on their judges and peers at AZBFS’ Awards Reception and Ceremony for short and feature films.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2010 Arizona Black Film Showcase.  Please visit www.azblackfilm.com for more information about

this year’s event.  Also visit us on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.  For general inquiries please contact AZBFS at info@azblackfilm.com.

BLACK EXPO

WEBSITE:                   www.blackexpoltd.com

DATE:                         JULY

LOCATION:               Oakland, CA

GENERAL:

Black Expo 2006 is the largest African American event in Northern California. It is an event that

is designed to promote African American economic development and to offer companies, large and small,

the opportunity to access our lucrative, oft overlooked market. No other event throughout the year in

the Bay Area is designed to focus the spotlight on and contribute to the economic empowerment of the

African American community as much as Black Expo 2006. No other event receives the same level of

community, small business and corporate participation. And no other event is identified as strongly

as a showcase event in our community.

There are many benefits people receive when they attend the Expo. Some find new business opportunities,

some meet old friends and make new ones. Many gain useful information to improve their lives throughout

the year. Some find new jobs and others find new hobbies. And just about everyone finds businesses

they can patronize Expo weekend and throughout the year. And, of course, they have a great time!

Black Expo 2006 draws attendees from as far north as Sacramento, as far south as the Monterey/Salinas

area and as far east as Modesto and Stockton. In addition we have had people come from Los Angeles

and Seattle for the event. Black Expo 2006 is well on its way to becoming a "destination event" with

people from around the country utilizing the timing of the Expo as an opportunity to visit the Bay Area

and come see friends and family.

Black Expo 2006 will be a family affair, and as such draws young and old. The median age range for

previous Expos was 25-45. It is expected that Black Expo 2006 will attract a similar age group (except for College Day 2006).

Black Expo 2006 is an event for the entire African American community and attracts individuals from

throughout the community. We make special efforts to target working class, middle class and upper

class individuals who have disposable income to spend with our vendors. Therefore the average income

for our attendees is higher than the average income in the African American community in Northern California.
